  KITAMURA SHIKAI was a Japanese sculptor. He traveled to France in 1900 to study and resided in Paris, where he learned Western-style sculpture using marble, including nude statues. His fame skyrocketed when a piece he exhibited at the 1907 Tokyo Industrial Exposition was destroyed by him in response to dissatisfaction with the judging process.
